Vitalik Buterin Considers Creating a Fixed Supply for Ethereum

Ethereum fixed supply

An announcement on Ethereum’s Github dated from April 1, proposes the creation of a hard cap for Ethereum at 120,204,432 ethers (exactly double the amount that were sold in the initial sale in 2014).

Vitalik said that a good time for the change would be during the next hard fork that alters distribution.

“In order to ensure the economic sustainability of the platform under the widest possible variety of circumstances, and in light of the fact that issuing new coins to proof of work miners is no longer an effective way of promoting an egalitarian coin distribution or any other significant policy goal, I propose that we agree on a hard cap for the total quantity of ETH,” he stated on his release.

However, Vitalik said on April 2 on Twitter that the announcement was an April fool’s “meta-joke”.

He stated that the reason he made the joke was because he wanted to see the arguments of the people over the fixed supply. He later wrote that after thinking about it, he is seriously considering the idea.

Ethereum’s founder ended the Twitter conversation by stating that “people do broadly support fixed supply.”
